Good Morning Girls Post: The Glory Of Mundane Tasks

After my 3rd baby I ~~realized~~ finally admitted that my family was suffering from all the "good works" I was doing at church. I was impatient with my children and resentful at my husband because I was so busy. When I signed up to "lead this" and "help with that" I thought I was doing the "good" thing...the right thing. But, I finally realized my ministry at home was much more important for the time being. Even though what I was doing did not seem like anything great, I knew it was important. This is not a very popular perspective in churches today. A lot of churches want you working and forget how much it takes to just care for a family. It was hard to step down from things. Sometimes people just didn't understand. Sometimes it was something I loved doing, but I knew the timing was not right. I did what God was telling me to do and He honored it. God has made us closer as a family then we have ever been. He is growing my children into these amazing little people with hearts after His own heart. And there is more peace in our lives. Our ministry at home is so important and we should never loose sight of that!

Friday Freezer Cooking: Chocolate Chip Cookies

I made a quick list of Goals for 2012 a few weeks ago. I am trying to get a concrete plan of action in place in order to be sure I make achieve at least some of them. In the meantime, I will celebrate the little bits of progress here and there. Tonight I was able to make a little progress on Goal #4: Cook and bake from scratch. I threw together some chocolate chip cookies.

I baked a few for the grits to eat right away and then rolled the rest of the dough into balls and stuck them in the freezer. (I am hoping this recipe will be fine out of the freezer.)

I'll put these in a freezer bag and pull them out as I need them.

This was surprisingly easy. I always dread making homemade cookies. I am thinking the hard part must be staying with the oven until they are all cooked because tonight it seemed like way less work then usual.

I also made some zucchini bread last week. This was the first time I have ever made it, so I was not sure how they would like it. Well, they ate 2 loaves in 2 days! I didn't have any for the freezer. But, I did grate the extra zucchini and put it in the freezer. When I am ready to bake some more the hardest part will be done.

My plan is to cook ahead (which will include freezer cooking) once a week and share it here on Fridays.

The Review

They are adorable, obviously. But, what I can not get over is how well made they are! They are made with a double layer of felt to make them nice and thick...and durable! We always do a unit study on winter weather to go along with our Snowflake celebration in January. You can read about it here and here. These weather pieces were the perfect addition!

Look at that hair! But the smile is so sweet.

You can take the girl out of Jersey, but you can't take Jersey out of the girl. Or, as it seems, out of the girl's last born daughter. Looks like Baby Grit has inherited the Jersey in me. We laugh all the time because she uses her hands when she talks. Picture someone saying "Mamamia" while shaking their hands. This morning she came to me and said, "Lucy is bawkin'." Not barking...bawkin'. My Yankee accent diminished long ago. Most people can not even tell I am from the North. I don't know where she is getting it from. Could it be genetic? lol.

With January coming to a close I know everyone is working hard on their New Year's goals. Was one of those goals to keep you home more organized and neater? I have come across the perfect system to make this a reality by getting your kids involved! I Did My Chores!

We have been using this system for a few months and it works great!

10 Goals for the Week

I only got 6 out of 10 done. That's not great, but it's not horrible. Every thing done is still progress. At least that is what I keep telling myself.

Last week's goals...

SPIRITUAL
1. ~~Start a Online Ephesians Bible Study~~ Started it and even have an email group going! Yay! The timing wasn't right to start a Bible study in my home. But, with this I am still able to bring women together to focus on the Lord. I feel so very honored and humbled to be doing this!
2. ~~Continue and or finish Fierce Beauty~~

MARRIAGE
3. ~~Continue to pray for him every day~~.

FAMILY / MOTHERING
4. Set aside a day to craft with them. They really want this and I need, need, need to follow through. uuugghh...still have not done this. I am putting this goal on the shelf for now + 5. ~~Clean and reorganize in the big grits room.~~ They did it themselves when I told them they could not spend their Christmas money on new toys until it was done.

PERSONAL
6. Try out fake eyelashes. A friend of mine did this herself and they look great. I am never good with things like this. So, we'll see how it goes.

HOME MANAGEMENT
7.Clean out and reorganize the shed
8. Deep Clean the Family Room

HOME SCHOOL
9. ~~We'll be visiting Tuskegee at the end of the week. Unit Study on Tuskegee Institute, George Washington Carver, Tuskegee Airmen, and others.~~ This was fantastic! A gold mine of history in our backyard! We did two books they sent us and it gave us a great little unit study.
10. ~~Make Winter Sensory Box for Baby Grit.~~ Done. Hopefully, I'll get some pics posted of this.

REVIEW: Alphabet Cards from House 8810

I want you to check out this cute online shop I came across a while back. House 8810 is a quaint little shop that sells very cute, very unique things at great prices! They have a little something for everybody. We were given a set of these beautiful Read to me Alphabet Cards. Each charming picture is printed on 8x10 heavy card stock. They are laminated and wipe clean with a damp cloth. They are a great learning tool and they are beautiful to look at as well. Check out what we did with them...

This is the beginning of our new "Preschool Corner" for Baby Grit!

She went right over and started showing me the pictures. We had a great time talking about the pictures and the matching letters.

I hung them with twine tied to small command hooks. I decoupaged some fun paper to the front of regular clothes pins I bought at Walmart. Super easy ans super cute!I hung them low so she can reach them. I want her to be able to interact with the cards the way she wants. Ans she did...

The only problem...she didn't seem to grasp the concept of putting them back. Oh, well. A lesson for another day:)

Good Morning Girls: Ephesians Online Bible Study Week 1: Verses 1-14

I started this really neat online Bible Study today....3 days late. But, who is counting?
This bible study uses a method called S.O.A.P.

S-Write out the scripture passage of the day
O- Write down 1-2 observations from the passage.
A-Write down 1-2 applications from the passage.
P-Pray over what you learned from today's passage.

They describe it as a "simple, slow method. The point is to fully mediate and take in each and every word in the passage for the day. "

This is my first day, but I am already in love with this method. So far this week we have covered Ephesians 1-10. It was simple to catch up and I feel full on God's word and His love. I have really been missing Him lately. I have not been in a good Bible Study in a while. And even though I have quiet prayer time every morning and read a few scriptures, there is something special about being in a Bible Study with other like-minded women who are praying for you.

God reveals so much in His word if we just take the time to meditate on it. After reading these passages today, I am refreshed in the knowledge that I am chosen in Him and will be holy and blameless through Jesus! I have redemption from my trespasses through the saving grace of the shed blood of Jesus!
What does that mean to me? It means I don't have to be good or perfect on my own. Which is a huge relief to me. I just have to give my life to the One who is perfect. Jesus. I am human and I fall short every day. I loose my temper, I do things with a bad attitude, I say things I shouldn't, and the list goes on. Thankfully the blood of Jesus covers these sins when I repent and I am able to stand before the Father holy and blameless. Praise God!

3. ~~Continue to pray "The Power of a Praying Wife" over my hubby~~.

4.Work on Klutz Craft Kits with grits
5.~~Clean out their rooms with them~~ They cleaned out the little girls' room while I cleaned out my closet. I put the idea in their head..so, it sort of counts. I just told them to clean it up right. Put all the toys in the right containers, etc. They asked if the could organize it for her! Well, of course!

PERSONAL
6. ~~Clean out my closet~~ It feels so good to have this done! It had gotten so bad I could barely get to my clothes.

A little boring this week. Not a lot of new recipes. There are a few repeats...bc, well...I never made them the other weeks. I really want to be that mom who tries a half a dozen new recipes every week, but truth be told....I am not. My family truly enjoys simple versions of food. Lucky me! And after a long day at school, I am not usually in the mood to work out a new recipe. So, this week I will be keeping it simple:)

While I am on the topic of keeping it simple, I'd love to go off on a little tangent. I think there is something to be said for eating the same things on the same days every week. Really. Would it be so bad to eat Tacos every Friday, Spaghetti every Sunday and so forth? It doesn't happen that way here bc I follow the sales and Mr. Steady does his thing. But, I read it in a book by a well seasoned home school mom and I think it's smart. It would sure make meal planning and shopping a lot easier. Even if you made a menu for 2 weeks and then rotated out. Hmm...may be something I need to test out in the JCAH home.

I am trying to work in a little freezer cooking and cook a few things ahead on Sundays. Hopefully, this will become a habit and will make my life easier in the long run.

Monday (My Mr. Steady has already changed the plan...I love that he cooks...don't get me wrong....but, sometimes it is hard to plan around him:)

B: On Hand
L: Leftover Ham and Potato Soup (This was pretty good. My grits are just not fans of cream based soups:(
D: Chicken Wings, Homemade French Fries, Tropical Fruit Salad (Fruit for dinner? In place of a veggie? Why not? We learned that in Brazil they eat fruit with almost every meal. Works for me.)

Tuesday
B: Omelets (we have cheese, ham, bell pepper, and onions on hand. We'll just make them to order)
L: Honestly, we rarely eat lunch on Tuesdays bc we eat a late breakfast. We usually just snack around 2 and we're good until dinner.
D: Grilled Chicken and Steak, Oven Baked Brown Rice and Spinach. (The chicken and steak will be compliments of Mr. Steady. The spinach will be straight out of the freezer bag into boiling water and then to the table. Salt optional. Told you. Simple. And, I don't know what I would do without this recipe for baked brown rice. It truly is fool proof brown rice!)

Wednesday
B: On Hand
L: Tuna Salad on Crackers
D: Black-eyed peas, Mash Potatoes, Collards and cheese onion biscuits. (I cooked all but the collards Sunday. They are in the freezer. So, we'll just have to pull it out and heat it up before AWANA)

Thursday
B: Whole Wheat Biscuits, Gravy and Bacon ( I am hoping to get some biscuits in the freezer this week)
L: Packed lunch for the grits and Steam fresh Veggies for me.
D: Turkey Taco Soup (This is one of those recipes I never got around to making, but really want to try bc my family loves anything tomato based or Mexican inspired. I just really want to know how the Turkey will go over: This won't be hard bc I put the shred up Turkey in the freezer when I ended up not using it. I will be a able to defrost and dump. Love those days.)

Friday
FIELD TRIP
B: To go (I haven't decided what yet. Maybe just cereal in bags. We'll see what's on sale at Publix. Maybe something fun and easy I can use)
L: Packed Lunch (Probably Peanut Butter sandwiches. They just travel so easy bc I don't have to worry about refrigerating them:)
D: Chicken Stir Fry and Fried Rice. (I am planning on getting some extra chicken at Kroger this week. The plan is to get a few bags of this in the freezer.)

Saturday
B: Pancakes (The plan is to make a bunch every Saturday and put them in the freezer to add a little variety to the "On Hand" breakfast. I think Goofy Grit would eat pancakes every day...and Baby Grit is right with her.)
L: Leftovers (It had to be on here once:)
D: Spaghetti and Sauce (This is becoming a sweet ritual in our house. Sporty Grit loves to cook. I remembered I had a friend that told me her working mom used to have each of the children make dinner one night a week to help her out. My friend is a great cook now. She said she started with very simple things and left the ingredients out or in the fridge with instructions. I decided you can't get much simpler then Spaghetti. She still needs a little help and reminding. She is only 8. But, I figure soon enough I will be able to leave her to it. Don't worry...I won't let her dump the boiling water until she is a good bit older.)

Sunday
B: Homemade Chocolate Covered Doughnuts (recipe to come, but you gotta have a doughnut maker)
L: We may have plenty of leftovers, but if we don't I have more Split Green Peas for soup.
D: Lunch is dinner on Sundays, so we'll just snack around.

On Hand for breakfast this week:
(The grits fix their own breakfast on most mornings)

Cereal (good deal on Kashi Go Lean at Kroger for the past 2 weeks. I stocked up)
Grits (my grits love grits..hehe)
Toast and Peanut Butter

We had a busy week starting back school last week. Mr. Steady changed my dinner plans for a few of the nights which means a few of these recipes are repeats.

I am also trying to use my leftover ham, so the the ham recipes are a little heavy at the end of the week. Hopefully, they won't notice:)

I always schedule in plenty of "leftover" days. I am so blessed to have a family that loves leftovers!

I can see the back of my fridge again! Yay! All that Christmas food is almost gone. Most people are probably sorry to see it go, but I never am. I am happy when the high calorie leftovers and abundance of deserts comes to an end and we can get back to more healthful eating.
It has been nice not having to really cook this week, though. I need to explore once-a-week cooking. Anyone know of any good books or websites on the subject? I would love it if you left me a comment letting me know.
Anyhow, here is this week's plan.

I love this time of year because soups in a slow cooker go wonderfully with the cooler weather. I am going to try to get some biscuits in the freezer, too. Warm soup and warm bread on a cold winter's day...yum!

Monday
B: Homemade donuts (I bought a donut maker on clearance at Wally World. We made them this past week and they were easy and good. The kids want me to chocolatize them...so guess I'll be working on a chocolate glaze this week:)
L: Leftover Cocktail Smokies and Veggies with dip
D: New Year's Day Dinner Again: Ham/ Black-eyed Peas/ Yellow Squash Casserole/Turnips/Crescents (I have a gazillion tubes of crescents bc hubby's store put them on sale for $1 a few weeks ago. I had a $1/2 coupon...that made them .50 a can! I bought a ton, so get ready to see them on my menu plan a lot.)
Do Ahead: Cook pinto beans for tomorrow's recipe.

I think I have finally found the goal setting list that I think is going to work for me. I found it at Money Saving Mom. I love the way she organizes her life! I don't think any one plan works for every person. I think you have to tweak any plan to fit your own needs, but Money Saving Mom's printable plans are a great jumping off point.

Last Weeks Goals...

Family/Mothering
1. ~~Plan some gift making projects for the grits to complete next week.~~Planned some and even made a few.
2.~~Read Some Christmas books to them.~~ They had a slumber party by the tree and I stayed up and read to them. It was really sweet.
3. ~~Stop, look and listen when they are talking to me. (sometimes I stay so busy I barely even look at them when they are talking:(~~ I think I did this well the first few days, but not sure about the end of the week.
4. ~~Mail out Christmas presents to my brother in N.J.~~

Personal Goals
(wow...it was hard to come up with things that were about me)
5. Learn the basic Zumba steps on my new Zumba 2 Fitness game. (got it with a House party) Oh...exercise it always the first to go around here.
6. ~~Get to bed by 10 pm every night.~~ I think I did this at least 5 out of 7 nights.

I'm on a roll. Woohoo! Last week's menu went so well. I am so inspired to keep this up!

I think three things made it such a success. 1. I planned my meals out of my pantry, so I did not have a big shopping list. 2. I added to the menu with things on sale, so I was able to keep the budget low. 3. I am living by my slow cooker, which keeps the time spent in the kitchen to a minimum.

You are going to see "leftovers" on here a few times. I am trying to make sure the fridge is pretty empty for Christmas dinner.

Tuesday
B: Omelets (Mr. Steady usually cooks on his off day...lucky me:)

D: The grits will be at their Nana's and hopefully Mr. Steady and I will have time to eat out and see a movie before we have to get him home to bed. He goes in to work at 3:30 am. Sooo...it is always early to bed. We may just have to eat popcorn for dinner;)

Menu planning is a huge help in keeping any home running smoothly. I know the weeks I do it I can definitely tell the difference. I have been trying to get consistent with a meal plans as part of my Maximize Your Mornings Challenge. I am so excited I have made a menu plan this early in the week! I just had to post it, even if it is a day late.

Nothing too fancy. I'll try to post any recipes I have used later in the week. I made my menu around what was in my pantry and freezer. A great way to keep my grocery budget down!

A Doll's Night Out Birthday Party

We have 4 out of 6 birthdays within 2 weeks of each other in the JCAH house. I call it our "birthday season." It gets more then a little tricky trying to orchestrate all of those celebrations and remain sane. Okay. Who am I kidding? I am as crazy as they get. I try to keep it as simple as possible,though. It really is possible to have a very simple party and the kids to still have a great time.

She wanted a sleepover and to incorporate her new AG Doll. I wanted to keep it simple. So we settled on "A Dolly Pizza Party and Movie Night" sleepover. Okay, that doesn't sound simple. But, it really was.

How is Home-school going?

Home-school is going great. We have worked out the kinks. (Yes, even in your 5th year there are kinks.) It is one of the reasons I have not been on here much, lately.

With 4 in school....I may as well count the baby. She is 3 and will not be left out. I spend from about 8 am to 3 pm schooling. I take care of housework and cooking when I first get up and during the day when I can. If I am lucky enough for it to be a day we are home in the afternoon, it's all I can do to get dinner ready, grits in bed and check a few emails and keep up with couponing. Couponing is a full time job in itself. I keep telling Mr. Steady I am working about 3 full time jobs. He just nods his head:)

Life is busy, but it is good.

Back from the Beach

We got in about 3:30 yesterday with 4 garbage bags of laundry, lots of seashells and we even brought a little of the beach home with us. I got busy putting things away while Mr. Steady unloaded the car. I figured I better start the laundry right away or I'd never get it done. Then it was a quick bite and off to AWANA for the grits. I came back and kept on with the laundry. Ordered in pizza, checked a few emails while they all played a card game and then off to bed! Phew! This is one pooped Mama!

Of course, life will not slow down. Today is Baby Grit's 3rd birthday. So, we will be working on a small family party for her while trying to finish the laundry and wrap up our week of MFW with a Mexican Fiesta. The plan is to have a Mexican Fiesta Dinner/Diego Birthday Party. We'll see if I can pull it off:)

Daily Recap: How Do You Prepare To Go Out Of Town?

Most people pack, right? Not me...I clean out closets first. Seriously. We are a day from heading out and I was clearing out my closet floor. Quite a few bags and boxes had piled up and they were driving me crazy. Next I tackled the front closet. I really have issues.
Then, it was finally time to... Nope. No packing yet. Then it was time to put up Fall decorations. Yep. It makes perfect sense. We won't be here, but our decorations will be up.

I finally got on to packing. Sort of.

This is all the swim/beach paraphernalia piled up along with a few food items I plan on bringing. I don't know if this actually counts as packing. It may just be considered gathering. At least it's a start.
I did get a menu plan and grocery list ready. We will have a fully stocked kitchen in our cottage. With a Publix just a mile down the road, I will be able to use my coupons to save us lots of money on food. Woohoo!
Hopefully I will be able to focus tomorrow so we can leave on time.

Daily Recap: October 7th

     I started this Daily Recap thinking it would be fun to hop on here every night and just share any random thoughts I have about my day. But, Daily would mean you are to do it every day. So sorry. I have had a few bad days around here. I started Wednesday off with a bad attitude due to lack of sleep and the day just spiraled downward from there. We just couldn't seem to get through school, everyone was cranky and Mommy was just downright grouchy. Thursday was just an extension of Wednesday. So, we won't even go there.
     I am dog tired right now and am ready to hit the hay. But, first I wanted to share this Guest Post at Musings of a Stay at Home Mom. Melanie from Only a Breath shares how our little ones are mirrors of ourselves. If we don't like what we see we have to take a good look at what we are giving them to mimic. I know this and yet I still find myself exhibiting behavior I tell my grits is not acceptable.

Here is the line that sums it all up for me....

"I don’t want to take one second with them for granted, and pray that God will help me treat each one in my family like the treasure they are."

     There are too many days I take my sweet family for granted and, unfortunately, they see the worst of Mommy. When I go to them and apologize for being impatient or losing my temper, they are always quick to wrap their little arms around me and tell me I'm the best Mommy in the whole world. I tell them I may not be the best Mommy in the whole world, but I am the Mommy who loves them the most!

Today was spent running around shopping for last minute clearanced summer items for out trip to the beach next week!!

That's right. We are spending 3 days and 2 nights at the beach! We are very excited. You see...we live about 3 hours from the Gulf of Mexico. But only one of the grits has ever been to the beach. And she was only 1 at the time. (She is now 9) So this is a big deal around here. God has blessed us this year with the financial resources and a great deal on a cottage with 2 bedrooms.

Mr Steady was able to get the time off and we are on our way. In a few days.

In the meantime, me and that Sporty Grit went in search of a cheap bathing suit we both liked that was not worn in the bottom. (like all of her hand-me-downs) Poor thing was wearing one that was dry rotted to Six Flags. That explains why she had to hold the bottoms up when she took off her shorts. Really, I should notice these things. Anyhow, we never found a bathing suit. But, I came across some cover-ups, some cute shoes, t-shirts, and some great accessories. Ugh. shopping for 4 girls and 1 woman really adds up. I only shop the clearance racks and apply coupons where I can, but I still end up spending more money then I would like.

    And I truly LOVE having the tissues at my fingertips! I usually leave a box on the floorboard, but it is wonderful not having to bend down to get one. Not to mention much safer:)

Curriculum for 2011-2012

   My good blogging buddy Brandi (say that 10x times fast!) has a linky going for this year's curriculum line ups. I thought it would be fun to share and then link up. I am streamlining our curriculum and we will be working together on a lot of things. I just couldn't pull off 3 different curriculum last year.
Here's the plan...you know how I loooove a plan:)

All together now....
We will be doing My Father's World Exploring Countries and Cultures together. It is set up for 2nd-6th grade. Goofy Grit is only in 1st, but I'm just going to let her tag along and get what she can out of it. I plan on adding age appropriate activities for her that correspond to each topic where I can.

Here is what we will cover:
Bible: The theme is missionary work.
History/ Geography: We will study maps and World Geography. We will study around 30 different countries.
Science: We will study habitats and animals.
Art: We will work through a book called Global Art* with ECC. I have yet to do any of the art recommended by MFW. Intentions are good, but time seems to run out. This one looks less artistic and more crafty which is much more my speed. I am thinking we will get through it this year.
That being said, I plan on finally working through the Drawing with Children* lessons from the MFW 1st Grade curriculum. It is only about 12 lessons. The grits love to draw and I would love to give them these techniques early. I want them to keep building on their ability and have the confidence to draw. Unlike their mom, who is terrified to pick up a pencil or paintbrush.( Probably why I have put this book off.)
Music:
                    Wee Sing Around the World will be easy and a lot of fun.We do a lot of listening in the car.
                   Tchaikovsky- I plan on doing a unit study with this at Christmas. It is from the MFW Adventures curriculum. I had the wrong CD last year and ended up just putting it down. I finally ordered the correct CD. Two of my grits have taken ballet for years now, so I think this unit study will be a big hit.

Writing:
             Cursive First- I plan on using this with all three grits. Dancing Grit has been teaching herself cursive this year using A Reason for Writing*, which is a great program as well. But, I like the idea of teaching the littles cursive early and it won't hurt her to tag along and get a little extra instruction. This was recommended by a friend and I think it will be a good fit. I can use one teaching book for all three. The practice sheets are reproducible and they write everything else on loose paper. MFW has a handwriting review scheduled for this year, so this will fit in perfect.

Extra Curricular they will all be doing: I am a little afraid this is too much, but they are begging to be out of the house more and with their friends more. We'll see how it goes.
   A.S.K.-This is the afterschool version Community Bible Study. It meets once a week for an hour and a half.    They have three daily lessons to be done during the week. They love it because they have a praise and worship time and they get to see public school friends. I love it for those reasons and the fact that it gives me an hour and a half to myself:)
   Awana: This is new for us. The church we are visiting at offers this on Wed. nights. My grits love being there and want to do anything they can to spend more time with the friends they have made. This looks like a very cool program.
       Dance Co-op- A homeschool mom friend of mine has found a college student willing to teach our girls dance for 2 hours once a week for a fraction of what it would cost to take it at a studio. The focus will be on praise and worship and having fun. It will be very informal. But, should be a good time for the grits.
   Acrobatics- All three grits will be taking an hour of acrobatics every week at a local home school co-op.

Language Arts:
                              Intermediate Language Lessons
                              Writing Strands Level 3
Math:
                              Math U See- We have used this since the start of our homeschooling and so far so good. She is about halfway through the Gamma book. We love this program. I love the instructional DVDs. We watch a new lesson taught by the creator of the program for each unit. It thrills me to not have to teach the concepts initially. Math is not my strength. I only have to understand what and how it is taught so I can help with any questions or problems. I loooooove that. She loves it because she gets what he teaches pretty effortlessly. His presentation is done in a way that makes it simple for the students to understand.

Piano:
                  The grits received keyboards for Christmas last year. I have been anxiously waiting for God to open a door for them to take lessons. He has provided a way through a mom who will be teaching piano out of her home. Because she is not certified she is giving a discounted rate. After playing all of her life and teaching her own 4 girls, I am sure her qualifications are right up there with the best of them.

Sporty Grit: 2nd Grade

Language Arts:
Click N Read- This a computer based phonics program that came recommended by a friend. The lessons are about 10-15 minutes long. She can work independantly to get in more phonics and spelling practice. What I really like about this program is that it keeps track of her mistakes and gives a report after each lesson. This way I can see where she needs help even though I am not doing the lessons with her.
All About Spelling*- This program has also come recommended by a friend. After looking at it online I really like it. It encompass phonics and spelling in one program. The approach is different then any I have seen. They will learn all sounds for each phonogram first. Then they will build words with letter tiles, which will be great for my kinesthetic learner. Sporty is a hands on learner and she is struggling a bit with her reading. I am praying this is the curriculum that makes it all come together for her. I think she will love using the tiles and the way everything is color coded.

Math:
Math U See- She is about a quarter of the way through the Alpha book. This program seems to be working for both of my older grits. Which a testimony for it's flexibility becasue they have such different learning styles.

Goofy Grit: 1st Grade

Language Arts:
                            All About Spelling- She is not far behind her older sister. I plan on working this program with both of them and just letting them progress at their own pace. Not sure how it will work out, but think it's worth a try.
                              Funnix: She will also be finishing up this computer program she started last year. I was able to snag this program for free during a promotion they were having. I love that is is done by the authors of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons*. She has done well with this so far. She likes the computer and there are also worksheets for each lesson. The only thing I don't like about it is that it does not keep up with her progress.
Math:
                            Math U See- She will start the Primer this year.

Baby Grit: Preschool

Preschool is really so simple. Just talk about colors and numbers and letters. And, of course read to them. I would love to plan a whole bunch of things for her. The reality is I probaly wouldn't do them because I am doing so much with the others. I have the MFW Preschool kit for her. I like the idea of her having a box full of things she can work on quietly. The Lauri toys look wonderful. I would like to get her sisters in on schooling with her, too. They can really teach her everything she needs at this age.

This looks like a lot now that it is down on paper, but I am optimistic. I am hoping that working together on so many things will enable us to get so much done. We shall see...

Hey, there! Hope everyone had a great summer. I took a much longer break from here than I had planned. I am so happy to be getting back in the swing of things, but have really enjoyed and appreciated my break from blogging. It gave me time to focus on some projects around the house. I also took the time to reorganize and clear out my school curriculum and supplies. I have put my wonderful Girlfriend's Guide to Home School Planning to good use by making course projections and lesson plans. Usually, I start the year half cocked. This year I feel fully loaded and ready to go! We have a lot planned and I knew I needed to be prepared. Can't wait to share it all with you!

Freezer Friday: Mexican Pinto Beans

Still no camera...still no pictures...I am so sorry:(

If you missed Monday's post, here is the ingredients list for Mexican Pinto Beans. Then just combine it all in your crock pot slow cooker and let it cook on high for 2 hours. Turn it down to low and let it cook for another 8 hours. It was delicious over brown rice with a little Frank's hot sauce!
You can freeze any leftovers in bags. Then use them as is, for Taco Soup or Chili.

What's on Sale for the Freezer?

I don't see much of anything this week. This would be a great week to get some baking done. I am thinking of making Mexican Pinto Beans. This is a slow cooker recipe, but I am thinking it will freeze really well. Wanna try with me?

Here are the ingredients: (I will probably double this)

1 lb dried pinto beans, soaked in water overnight and drained
4 cups water
1 large onion chopped
14 1/2 oz can tomatoes
2 garlic cloves, minced (I'll use the kind out of the jar in my fridge)
2 tsp. chili powder
1/4 lb lean ham, chopped

What's on Sale for the Freezer?

As most of you probably already know, a huge way to save money on your grocery bill is to plan your menu around what is on sale for the week. I figure we should do the same thing with Freezer cooking. To do this it will take a little planning, but not much I promise. Just pick up these few things if you want to freeze along with me.

This week's sale items I plan to freeze:

Kroger
Strawberries 16 oz $1.68
Southern Peaches $1 lb
Tyson Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts $1.79-1.99 lb

I plan to:

Freeze the strawberries whole for smoothies
Freeze the peaches sliced in unsweetened apple juice. (Instructions to come)
Make Chinese Chicken Morsels Ingredient list:

1 1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts (3 cups)
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
1 teaspoons cayenne pepper
1 cup uncooked rice

I keep most of this on hand, so this should be an easy recipe. I plan on buying 6 lbs of chicken and making 4 batches of this. That will give us Chinese once a week for a month. My grits will love that!

Super Simple Summer Recipe: Olive Pasta Salad

My good blogging buddy Brandi over at Living Sola Gratia has started a new link up for your best Super Simple Summer Recipes. Here is the simplest thing I make in the summer....

Olive Pasta Salad

Can of black olives (can buy the whole and chop or be lazy like me and just buy the already chopped)
Mayo
16 oz Box of Pasta (I use elbow macaroni, but you could use twists, bow-ties, or whatever you fancy)

Cook pasta according to directions. Add mayo to taste. I just put enough to get the pasta moist. Add olives. Stir.
See.Super Simple. So simple I'm almost embarrassed to post it. Almost. But, it's surprisingly tasty and my grits love it!

The Review

Do you and your children love to sing? Do you love classic kid songs and Sunday school songs, but wish they were just a little more fun to sing? That is where we were. Kinda tired of the "kiddie" music, but not really ready for the older contemporary groups out there. Then, I discovered The Go Fish Guys! Their upbeat fun style has something for everyone... including mom! And the best part is they are sharing God's truth in their music. From their remakes of the classic hymnals like "This is My Father's World" to originals like "Kickin' It Old School" you will hear that God rules and Jesus is the only way!

Have you heard of The Go Fish Guys yet? Jamie, Jason and Andy are three guys making some really fun Christian and Kid music that won't drive us (parents) bonkers!

We are, to say the least, HUGE Go Fish fans. We own three albums: Snazzy, Superstar and Kickin' It Old School (2 were compliments of The Go Fish Guys for this review) We love them all. The Go Fish Guys are stepping out on faith and holding their first Minivan Music Jam August 3rd in Sioux Falls, S.D. This is a FREE 2 hour evangelistic event featuring Go Fish, special guest Denver and the Mile High Orchestra and EMCEE Dave the Horn Guy. This is a little of what Jamie has to say about it on his blog:

"There is a need for an event like this for the family. Music will be the tool to draw people in. The gospel will be what changes lives forever. It’s time to “Go Fish” and we are up for the challenge. Stay tuned for more details as we seek to do God’s will for His glory!"

Friday's Freezer Cooking on the Fly : Pinto Beans and Brown Rice

I love the idea of freezer cooking. But the once-a-month method does not work for me. First of all, I shop the sale adds. Buying a long list of ingredients at one time does not work for me. Second, it sounds like the all day cooking gets exhausting. I prefer to Freezer Cook on the Fly. What does that mean? Cook extra when I can and put it in the freezer as meals and starters for a later date. I use what I have on hand, on sale or what I already plan on purchasing. I try to put something in the freezer at least once a week. Sometimes I plan, sometimes I don't. It really does not matter because every little bit helps.

Just Do What You Can When You Can!

What made it into the freezer this week......

I started with these beans. I found a very basic recipe for Slow Cooker Pinto Beans on Spark People. ( Did I mention I am using that website to track my fitness and try and get some weight off?)

We ate the beans and Fool Proof Oven Baked Brown Rice for supper.

I fixed Taco Soup with about two of cups of the beans. I never do Taco Soup the same. Here is what I used this time around.

This was already in the fridge from a couple of nights before.

Taco soup is so forgiving. I just throw whatever I have on hand in. Just make sure you get in the ranch dressing mix...that's what really makes it.

I just sprinkled these in to taste.

I mixed everything but the V8 juice.


Then added the V8 until I had the amount of soup I wanted. This is one of my favorite ways to use V8 juice that has been in the fridge for a while.

Then I covered it and put it in the fridge for the next day. I mix the ingredients in the crock keep it in the fridge over night. Then, I take it out and let it sit at room temperature for a bit before I turn it on the next day. I have never had any problems.

I put 2 pint size bags of pinto beans in the freezer.

These will be used for another beans and rice dinner or chili or taco soup. I know this is about the same as opening a can of beans, but, this way is much more economical and will have much less sodium.
